Marcos Antonio

Bio (English)

Marcos Antonio was born in Baitoa, a small town in the mountains of the Dominican Republic.  He became a laborer at the age of 5 to help support his family of 11.  In 1971, the family emigrated to New York and a few years later Marcos Antonio enrolled in the US Army, where he served for six years.  He later acquired a business degree and became the owner of a cosmetic line.  He sold his successful business in 1994 to dedicate himself entirely to painting, his life long passion.  Marcos Antonio has exhibited his art work on three continents and has spoken about Latin American art at museums and galleries throughout New England.  From 1999 to 2002, Marcos became the director of the Providence Festival of New Latin American Cinema.  He is also the founder of the Anthony Quinn Life Achievement Award in Film and the Arts.  Since 1990, he has acted as Providence's unofficial ambassador to the Caribbean, and this role, has undertaken humanitarian missions and represented the interests of Rhode Island institutions.  In the fall of 2001, Marcos Antonio became Providence's first Director of Hispanic Affairs.

Marcos Antonio nació en Baitoa, un pequeño pueblo en las montañas de la República Dominicana.  A los cinco años de edad comenzo a trabajar como obrero para ayudar a su numerosa familia de 11. En 1971, la familia emigró a Nueva York. Unos años despues, Marcos Antonio se enrolo en el ejército de los EE.UU., al que prestó servicios por seis años. Luego de seguir estudios empresariales, adquirió una linea de cosmeticos. En 1994, vendió esta existosa empresa para dedicarse de lleno a su passión, las pintura. Ademas de exhibir sus cuadros en tres continents, Marcos Antonio ha discursado sobre el arte latinomericano en museos y galerias de Nueva Inglaterra. Desde 1999, al 2002, fue director del Festival del Nuevo Cine Latino Americano en Providence, Rhode Island. También fue el fundador del premio Anthony Quinn Life Achievement Award in Film and the Arts. Desde el 1990, ha sido el embajador extraoficial de la ciudad de Providence en el Caribe, y como tal ha viajado en misiones humanitarias y ha representado los intereses de instituciones de Rhode Island. En el 2001, Marcos Antonio fue nombrado el primer Director de Asuntos Hispánicos de la ciudad de Providence, Rhode Island.
